A 19-year-old White teenager was arrested for a possibly racially motivated attack aimed towards an African-American woman running for sheriff in Beaumont, Texas.
According to The Huffington Post, Adam Carver was charged with deadly conduct for discharging a firearm while shooting at Zena Stephens‘ campaign office. On Monday evening, Carver pulled up to Stephens’ office in a White Cherokee Jeep with four others and fired a single shot while screaming, “F**k the niggers.”
Beaumont police claimed Carver confessed to the incident two hours after he was caught with a BB-style gun and a low-caliber rifle. The other passengers were not charged with a crime.
A total of 20 people were inside the lobby when the shot rang out. No one was harmed. On Tuesday, Stephens thanked her supporters.
Via NBC News:
“Anytime something like that happens with innocent people around, you’re concerned for them,” Stephens said. “I don’t know if it was a random act or whether it was targeted, but I just think it is, you know, ignorance.”
“I am thankful none of our volunteers were injured,” she wrote to her supporters. “Today is Super Tuesday and our main focus continues on our campaign. As I have said to my team from the beginning we will continue to run a clean and professional campaign.”
Stephens is currently in the running for Jefferson County sheriff. In a statement to Port Arthur news site, Pan News, race opponent Ray Beck spoke out Monday about the shooting:
“Earlier tonight (Monday), I learned about the incident at Zena Stephen’s campaign office. I am glad to hear that Zena, family, and campaign staff are safe. In this day and age, it is appalling to know that people can act with such malice. I hope to see this issue prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. For now I am thankful to hear that no one was harmed. My thoughts are with Zena and her campaign,” Beck said in his statement.
Police are currently reviewing Carver’s mental health.
