A national healthcare company has come under fire for an advertisement that bans Haitians for applying for the position of a registered nurse.
According to Pix11, staffing agency Interim HealthCare posted an ad in a New City Pennysaver distributed in West Havernstraw, New York, asking for a “laid back nurse” for the position of a “Female LPN/RN.”
They also included that applicants should have a NYS certificate and requested that Haitians not apply. Senator David Carlucci, the youngest senator from Clarkstown, NY, has promised to launch an investigation into the ad with the NYS Department of Labor and the Equal Opportunity Employment Commission.
In statistics gathered by MinorityNurse, roughly 9.9 percent of RNs self-identified as Black. The majority of the RN population–2.5 million–are employed in the nursing field through hospitals and nursing care facilities. Asian/Pacific Islander nurses are more likely to have the most education in the field, with African-Americans second (14.6 percent), and White nurses last with 13.4 percent.
Berthilde Dufrene, founder of the Haitian American Nurses Association, and current president Mireille Leroy spoke to CBS New York about the ad.
Berthilde Dufrene told CBS2’s Hazel Sanchez that her jaw dropped when she first saw the ad.
“Why the Haitian nurses? And I started to think what could possibly trigger such a mean and disgusting thing from anyone,” Dufrene said.
“It’s very distasteful, hurtful for this day and age, to have this published,” Mireille Leroy, a 24-year nurse and president of the Haitian American Nurses Association of Rockland County said, adding that kind of “racism will not be tolerated.”
Interim HealthCare hasn’t yet responded to complaints about the advertisement.
